Locating a Will

The Public Trustee and Guardian (PTG) maintain a Will Register for the ACT. This register comprises:

  • Wills that were made by the PTG
  • Wills community members have chosen to deposit into the register
  • Wills previously held by the ACT Supreme Court
  • Wills prepared by Legal Aid.

There are several ways you can locate a Will for yourself or another person (where you are eligible):

  • Enquire with us via our contact form on our website: https://www.ptg.act.gov.au/contact-us
  • Contact the deceased persons bank, solicitor, accountant or other professional as they may have details of where the Will is located
  • Place a notice in the ACT Law Society's publication 'Hearsay' by emailing communications@actlawsociety.asn.au with the following information:

"[Full name of deceased], late of [address], who died on [date]. Please contact [name]. Phone: [phone number]. Email: [email address]."

Individuals searching for their own Will, executors, persons administering a deceased estate, and authorised representatives may make enquiries. The PTG may require evidence of identity and eligibility before providing information about a Will.

Fees apply to retrieving a Will and can be seen here: https://www.ptg.act.gov.au/our-fees.
